I know. Most of you have probably thought that this post was going to be about Laura Jane Grace (formerly known as Tom Gabel), the
frontman frontwoman of Florida folk-punkrockers Against Me! Her story is truly inspiring for anyone fighting against prejudices and seeking their sexual/personal freedom; a boy who was raised inside the punk-rock scene having to deal with a lot of homophobic behaviours and who, in his thirties, married and with a daughter, decided to accept and reveal her true self, as a woman. Happily, her family supported that decision and the band, or at least the only original remaining member, supported that too.
And it’s James Bowman, guitarist of Against Me! the one we’re talking about today. There’s a lot of charm in this slightly chubby white guy. Either his rugby-player complexion, his symmetric face, his thin eyes, his sexy bit of facial hair, his colourful tattoos or the whole package. Along with the powerful music full of anthems that the band crafts makes this cute man a perfect subject for this long-time forgotten blog.
Musically speaking I always had kind of a crush on choruses and backing vocals. Against Me!, as many other melodic punk-rock bands, have a great taste in this field and luckily we get to hear not only his fierce and catchy riffs, but also James’ voice on many tracks. At the bottom of this post I attach a couple of my favourite songs of the band, although he isn’t visually featured much. Well, I guess the editors of the videos don’t share my taste in men. Pity.
Anyway, enough of my rambling, enjoy this set of pictures of James Bowman punk-rocking our world.
Ok, now that you’ve seen him in all his individual glory, let’s put him in context. Some promo pics of Against Me! along the years. As for the bands’ albums, they are pretty outstanding. “Reinventing Axl Rose”, “New Wave” or “Transgender Dysphoria Blues” are great albums that showcase different brilliant moments of one of the most interesting melodic punk-rock or simply alt-rock bands of its time.
And I wish there were more videos of him just not performing, because he has a really cool vibe. Like chill and witty but really down-to-earth and shy. Maybe I’m making all this up, LOL, but just seeing him stand there smiling, laughing and reacting to what Grace says in an interview is really cool. I can almost picture him reading this post and just having a good time (I hope), where some other could be upset or whatever.
In fact, by watching recent interviews to the band, he looks like a really nice and patient guy, because more than once he sits there while some uninformed journalist asks Laura things about her personal life. Although that is probably exhausting to her, I think it must be horribly boring/frustrating to him all that talk about non-music related things. Anyway, it’s really great that he is so normal about the whole thing, saying that accepting his friend’s coming-out was not a big deal or a big shock to him without even needing to go into further detail. It sends the message “well, is my friend, who cares he or she?” which ultimately I find more positive than a hundred of elaborate speeches about tolerance.
But enough of that sensationalist bullshit, let’s put this to an end with a little funny video of Bowman and Grace showing some of their tattoos and telling how he made her a reversed tattoo while being drunk.
Fuck, this still is hot.
